These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, just 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to reserve john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered 3rd-level domain names remained active.
